A photo of the Kumagawa (river) taken from the train going to Kumamoto

Along the Kumagawa: As the train headed along the section from Hitoyoshi to Yatsushiro the railway follows the course of the Kumagawa ("Kuma" - bear, "gawa" - river, note the Japanese word for river is actually "kawa", but sometimes in the name of a river it is pronounced "gawa" it really depends on what sounds better with the first part of the name.). The scenery along this section of the line is spectacular, shear cliff faces on each side and the clean waters of the river. There are plenty of turns and tunnels as well.

The photo above was taken at a point the along the Kumagawa where there was a bit of road and bridge as well. For most of this part of the line there is only the railway (single tracked), the mountains and the river. To really capture just how spectacular this scenery is you would need to use a video/movie camera with a very wide angle lens.
